I got rained out of work early yesterday afternoon but when I got home it wasn't raining so I decided to take the dog for a quick walk. We went up to the Blueridge Parkway and did the stretch of the Shut In from Sleepy Gap to Bent Creek Gap. It was threatening to storm to whole time but we made it to the gap without a problem:
Our luck ran out and the storm hit us when we hit the top of Truckwheel Mountain on the return trip. A quick wet descent and we were back at the truck and ready to get home and get the bike and head out to Dupont for the weekly club meeting.
After a series of text messages it was decided that it probably hadn't rained at Dupont so the ride was still on. It was just Jonathon, Dennis and myself without another car in sight. We started out up Mine, headed for the river. The trails were damp so we took care to be extra safe. The Little River crossing was a little deeper than usual but we all plowed straight through it:
From there it is was on around Burnt:
On the way down it had started raining and we figured the most sustainable trail choice would be up the steep side of Cedar Rock. It was wet and slick and even though I was running a huge rear cog my tires slipped and I had to get off and push a little.
After that we decided we had better head back so it was straight through the river again and then on the Reasonover to finish things up. Jonathon was flying up Reasonover and it was all I could do to catch him at the top of the climb before he disappeared again on the downhill. It was dark and slick and too much fun. A quick stop at the lake to rinse off and another episode of the WNDC was in the books!
